Cuerpos extraños en pacientes pediátricos 5 años de revisión

Background: The foreign bodies are a common problem in the pediatric population and often trigger very serious emergencies.

Objective: Analyzing the characteristics of children with ENT foreign body, whose extraction was carried out by specialist and under general anesthesia

Methods: A retrospective study, Children's Hospital Roberto del Rio , from January 2003 to December 2007

Results: 65 patients were analyzed, 48% male and 42% female, with a median of 4 years, the population most affected was the lowest in 6 years with 70.8%. The main causes for extraction by general anesthesia were previous attempts failed and foreign body not observed by direct visualization; the foreign body in auditory canal was the most common and tree tracheobronchial had increased morbidity and time of hospitalization.  The types of vegetable seeds, metals and plastic were predominant foreign bodies

Conclusions: Children under 6 years are the most needed general anesthesia; the bodies tracheobronchials have increased morbidity and the parents still are key element in preventing such accidents.
